The House of Representatives has convened an emergency sitting to consider a budget extension bill seeking to prolong the implementation period of the capital component of the 2025 budget by three months. The session is scheduled for Monday, June 15, 2026, and is aimed at addressing delays in capital project execution nationwide.
The emergency sitting was communicated in a notice dated June 11, 2026, signed by the Acting Clerk of the House, Ibrahim Sidi. Lawmakers were informed that the sitting will hold at 11:00 a.m. under Order Five, Rule 2(2) of the Standing Orders of the House of Representatives.
The notice stated: “The purpose of the Emergency Sitting is to consider the Appropriation (REPEAL and Enactment) Act, 2025 (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill, 2026 to further extend the implementation of the Capital aspect of the Budget from 30th June to 30th September 2026.”
The proposed budget extension bill seeks to give Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) additional time to complete ongoing capital projects and fully utilize allocated funds under the 2025 fiscal framework. It also reflects concerns over slow implementation of infrastructure and development projects, which have faced delays across various sectors.
The Acting Clerk directed all lawmakers to prioritize attendance at the emergency session. The notice emphasized the importance of participation, stating: “All Honourable Members are required to take note and accord the Sitting priority attendance, please.” The urgency of the session underscores the legislative focus on ensuring continuity in governance and improved execution of public infrastructure projects.
If the budget extension bill is passed by both chambers of the National Assembly and signed into law by President Bola Tinubu, the capital component of the 2025 budget will now run until September 30, 2026. The extension is expected to provide MDAs with additional time to complete ongoing projects, reduce abandoned infrastructure initiatives, and improve overall budget performance.
The emergency sitting highlights ongoing legislative efforts to improve budget implementation and ensure effective utilization of public funds. The outcome of the budget extension bill will determine the next phase of capital project delivery across federal ministries and agencies.
