According to reports, Jonathan is weighing the possibility of contesting the 2027 presidential election using the PDP platform after what sources described as extensive consultations on his political future. Vanguard reported that groups loyal to the former president had intensified moves to purchase the PDP nomination form on his behalf ahead of the party’s submission deadline.
The issue gained further attention after earlier comments credited to Jonathan suggested he would “consult widely” before taking a final decision regarding the presidential race. The renewed Jonathan 2027 declaration debate has also reopened conversations around constitutional eligibility, opposition coalition politics, and regional political alignments ahead of the next election cycle.
A senior figure within Jonathan’s political camp told Vanguard that the former president had settled on the PDP as his preferred platform because it offered stronger political prospects for a return bid. The source claimed that multiple support organisations were already competing to raise the N100 million required for the PDP nomination form.
Groups reportedly linked to the mobilisation efforts include Coalition for Jonathan, Goodies Movement, The New Nigeria movement, Arewa for Better Government, and Northern Youth Alliance for Good Governance. According to the report, several of the organisations had pledged to independently finance Jonathan’s nomination process.

Afenifere cautioned the former president against re-entering active partisan politics, arguing that his international democratic credentials and post-presidency reputation should be preserved. Akin Osuntokun, a former Special Adviser to President Olusegun Obasanjo, advised Jonathan to remain focused on statesmanship and democratic advocacy through the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation.
Similarly, a senior official of the Christian Association of Nigeria expressed concern that the growing political realignments could deepen divisions within opposition ranks ahead of the elections. The Northern Elders Forum also reacted to the development, stating that it was not endorsing Jonathan, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, or President Bola Tinubu at this stage of the political process.
