The debate surrounding the Oyo 2027 successor race intensified after an aide to Governor Seyi Makinde clarified that the governor has not endorsed any candidate ahead of the next governorship election in the state. The clarification followed increasing political speculation over possible successors within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Governor Makinde, who is serving his second term in office, will complete his tenure in 2027 in line with constitutional provisions. As political alignments gradually begin ahead of the next election cycle, discussions over the Oyo 2027 successor have continued to dominate political conversations within the state.
Several political figures within the PDP and opposition parties have reportedly intensified consultations and grassroots engagements as early positioning for the governorship contest gathers momentum. The governor’s influence within the party structure has also placed attention on whom he may eventually support.
The succession debate comes amid ongoing assessments of Makinde’s administration, particularly in infrastructure development, education, and state economic reforms.
Dr Suleimon Olanrewaju, a media aide to Governor Makinde, dismissed reports suggesting that the governor had secretly endorsed a preferred candidate for the governorship race. He stated that no decision had been taken regarding the Oyo 2027 successor.
According to him, the governor would only make his position known after proper consultations with party stakeholders and political leaders across the state. “The governor will publicly announce his preferred governorship candidate once consultations are concluded,” Olanrewaju said.
He added that political discussions currently taking place within the PDP should not be interpreted as evidence of an endorsement, stressing that the process remains open. The issue of the Oyo 2027 successor has attracted increasing attention in recent weeks following reports linking several political appointees and party leaders to possible succession plans within the ruling party.
Makinde had previously stated that competence, leadership capacity, and continuity of governance would be important considerations in determining the future direction of the state. Political observers believe those remarks have further intensified public interest in succession calculations within the PDP. Opposition parties in the state have also begun internal consultations ahead of the election cycle, positioning themselves to challenge the ruling party in 2027.
The clarification may help reduce tension among aspirants and competing political blocs within the PDP, especially as consultations continue ahead of party primaries.
Political analysts say delaying an official endorsement gives the governor flexibility in managing party interests and maintaining internal balance around the Oyo 2027 successor debate. The development also reflects how succession politics continue to shape political calculations in states where incumbent governors maintain strong influence within party structures.
