The Inspector-General of Police has declared that the era of impunity in the Nigeria Police Force is over following the recent Effurun shooting in Delta State. The statement comes amid disciplinary actions against officers linked to the incident, which resulted in public outrage and internal investigations.
The IGP made the declaration during a public address in Uyo, where he reiterated that accountability will now define policing standards across the country. The position was restated in relation to the Effurun shooting case, where officers have faced dismissal and prosecution proceedings.
According to the police leadership, the era of impunity is over as part of renewed enforcement of discipline within the force. The IGP stressed that officers who violate professional standards will face dismissal and criminal prosecution without exception.
The Effurun shooting occurred in Delta State and involved a police operation that resulted in the death of a civilian, identified as Mene Ogidi. The incident triggered public protests and renewed scrutiny of police conduct in the country.
Following the incident, the officers involved were withdrawn from operational duty and transferred to Abuja for disciplinary review. Internal panels, including the Force Disciplinary Committee, examined their conduct and use of firearms. Authorities confirmed that the investigation focused on violations of operational procedures and the rules governing use of force during police operations.
The Force Disciplinary Committee reportedly found that the officers involved breached established operational guidelines. Based on its findings, recommendations were made for dismissal and prosecution of the officers implicated in the shooting.
The IGP approved the recommendations and ordered that the officers be subjected to both administrative and criminal processes. The police leadership stated that the action reflects a firm stance on accountability within the force.
Reiterating that the era of impunity is over, the IGP stated that no officer will be shielded from consequences where unlawful conduct is established.
The Effurun shooting has drawn attention from civil society groups, legal practitioners, and rights advocates, who have called for transparency in police accountability processes. The incident has also renewed debates on the use of force in law enforcement operations.
The Nigeria Police Force stated that internal reforms are ongoing to strengthen discipline and restore public trust. Authorities maintain that enforcement of professional standards is essential to improving policing outcomes nationwide. Observers note that consistent application of disciplinary measures may influence public perception of law enforcement accountability over time.
