OAU lecture venue rejection was clarified by the management of Obafemi Awolowo University, which stated that a proposed lecture by Peter Obi was declined due to late submission by organisers. The OAU lecture venue rejection followed concerns raised after the planned event in Ile-Ife was cancelled shortly before it was scheduled to take place.
The development followed public remarks by Peter Obi, who expressed concern over what he described as repeated cancellations of academic engagements at Nigerian universities. He noted that the incident at OAU was not isolated, stating that similar occurrences had happened multiple times in recent months.
The lecture was expected to hold at the university before Obi proceeded to Ibadan for a separate political engagement. However, the cancellation drew attention to the processes governing approval of events involving high-profile personalities within university campuses.
In a statement issued by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, management explained that the organisers failed to provide adequate details about the event until Friday, a day before the scheduled lecture.
The institution stated that such short notice made it difficult to complete necessary logistical and security arrangements required for hosting a high-profile guest. It emphasised that events involving prominent figures require sufficient time for coordination with relevant security agencies, including the Nigeria Police and the Department of State Services.
According to the statement, “events involving high-profile personalities… require adequate prior notification” to ensure safety and proper planning. Management added that due to the inability to complete these arrangements within the limited timeframe, approval for the use of Oduduwa Hall was not granted.
The university further clarified that the OAU lecture venue rejection was based strictly on safety considerations and adherence to institutional protocols, not on the personality or status of the invited speaker.
The OAU lecture venue rejection highlights the importance of compliance with institutional procedures when organising events within Nigerian universities. It also underscores the role of security planning in managing high-profile gatherings on campuses.
The incident has contributed to broader discussions about access to academic platforms and the balance between administrative control and intellectual engagement within higher institutions.
