Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has announced plans to challenge the 2026 Electoral Act in court, raising concerns about certain provisions in the newly enacted law.

Obi made the statement on Saturday after formally registering as a member of the African Democratic Congress in his hometown of Agulu.

The former Anambra State governor said he intends to contest the legality of the law, arguing that some of its provisions could affect the credibility of future elections.

According to him, the Independent National Electoral Commission should focus on conducting elections rather than becoming involved in how political parties choose their candidates.

Obi stated that the electoral body should act like a referee whose role is to officiate the process rather than determine how political parties prepare their candidates for elections.

He also alleged that some aspects of the new electoral law appear designed to influence the outcome of the 2027 general elections.

The politician further stressed the importance of collaboration among opposition groups across the country ahead of future elections.

He noted that the South-East region is working with other parts of Nigeria to build a stronger political alliance.

Obi’s remarks come amid ongoing debate over provisions in the 2026 Electoral Act and their potential impact on Nigeria’s electoral process.
