The Federal Government (FG) has commissioned a closed-circuit television (CCTV) monitoring centre for the Second Niger Bridge, officials say, adding a new layer of security and surveillance to one of Nigeria’s busiest transport routes.

The commissioning took place on Sunday, January 17, 2026, at the facility near Onitsha in Anambra State.

Mr Chima Nwafor, Executive Director, Projects, Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, explained that the CCTV centre will allow real-time monitoring of traffic, security threats, and emergency situations on the bridge and its approaches.

The system includes high-definition cameras, a control room, and a 24-hour operations team that can coordinate with security and emergency response agencies when needed.

The Second Niger Bridge links Anambra and Ebonyi states and serves thousands of drivers, commuters, and commercial vehicles daily.

Officials said the CCTV network will help improve road safety, traffic flow, and incident response times for crashes or breakdowns along the stretch of the bridge and its connecting roads.

Present at the event were senior officials from the Ministry of Works and Housing, representatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nigeria Police Force, and local stakeholders. They described the CCTV centre as a key tool for tackling insecurity and improving commuter confidence along the bridge corridor.

The bridge, which was completed and opened for public use in 2023, has become a vital economic link between Nigeria’s South-East and other regions, reducing travel times and supporting trade and commerce.

The new CCTV facility complements earlier technology and infrastructure upgrades aimed at modernising the transport network in and around Onitsha.

Mr Nwafor said the system is expected to help authorities detect accidents, traffic jams, and security risks sooner, allowing faster deployment of emergency responders and law enforcement. Officials noted that such monitoring systems are becoming standard in major transport hubs to enhance public safety and reduce response times during crises.

The Federal Government reiterated that the CCTV project reflects a broader commitment to modernise national infrastructure, strengthen public safety measures, and support seamless movement of goods and people across major transport corridors.

Stakeholders said they expect continued improvements to the system, including possible integration with traffic analytics and intelligent transport solutions.

Officials encouraged motorists and commuters to take confidence in the enhanced monitoring, noting that the CCTV centre will help authorities identify and address security and traffic challenges more effectively in real time.
