The Obidient Movement has rejected claims that it promotes division in Nigeria’s political space, describing such labels as rooted in fear of accountability as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.

The group made the response in a public statement on Monday. The statement was signed by Dr Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide.

The dispute stems from criticisms by some political figures regarding the tone and conduct of supporters of former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi.

These critics have portrayed the Obidients as potentially divisive within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition.

The Obidient Movement’s statement emphasised that such criticisms distort the origins and purpose of the group. The movement said it did not emerge from extremism or intolerance but from grassroots frustration with governance conditions in Nigeria.

In the statement, the movement said accusations of divisiveness misrepresent both its history and mission. It stated that the group developed out of concern over issues such as poor governance, rising poverty, and weakening public institutions.

“Calling Obidients ‘divisive’ fundamentally misrepresents both the origins and purpose of the movement,” the statement said. It added that the movement reflects a broad cross-section of Nigerians, including professionals, traders, students, and civil servants.

The Obidients also addressed their role within the ADC coalition. The statement said being part of a coalition does not require silence or uncritical loyalty.

It noted that coalitions in democratic systems are meant to bring together diverse ideas, encourage debate, and build alternatives.

The movement stated that vocal political participation should not be mistaken for hostility or disunity. It described active engagement as a feature of reform-driven movements in functioning democracies.

“Passion in politics is not a crime,” the statement said, adding that elections are determined by organisation, alliances, credibility, and leadership rather than online rhetoric.

The Obidient Movement reaffirmed its commitment to the prospect of a Peter Obi presidency in 2027. It described this as the clearest path to national renewal, economic recovery, and accountable governance.

The group urged Nigerians to remain focused and united as the political environment evolves toward the general election.

The Obidient Movement has formally rejected claims of divisiveness against it. The group said such claims mask a fear of scrutiny and accountability and reaffirmed its engagement within the ADC coalition.

The movement maintained that active political involvement and debate are part of democratic practice ahead of the 2027 general elections.
